cyclo-cross

Cyclo-cross is off-road racing for roadies! Races take place on short circuits and typically last for an hour for senior riders – shorter for other categories. In muddy or difficult conditions riders frequently have to carry the bike and it is common for race organisers to use obstacles to force riders to dismount.

Cyclo-cross is a great way to stay fit over the winter, improve your bike-handling and have a big load of fun. Race meetings have a great atmosphere and the crowd is very friendly and generous, with riders from different clubs helping each other out. It's not unheard of for a rider to finish on a borrowed bike and not even know who the owner is.

west midlands cyclo-cross league
Starting in September and running through to February, the West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League is a series of 12 events each organised by a local club and featuring a variety of terrain. Registered riders are allocated points according to their finishing position in each race. The total points from each rider's best nine races determine their overall position in the league.

With its large youth contingent well supported by seniors, veterans and ladies, Halesowen has established a considerable presence in the league. We have won the team prize for two consecutive years as well as podium places (ie, top three) in several categories.

winter club championships
Held at our Manor Abbey Stadium in February, the Winter Club Championships are open to all members. You just need a bike – a mountain bike will do – and a willingness to suffer and get muddy!

The Club Champs are a real laugh and even if you don't want to get dirty, come along and cheer on those that do!

other events
The Three Peaks Challenge (a particularly long and arduous 'cross to bear) is a challenge for even the fittest rider. The Boxing Day 'cross at Kenilworth (on December 26th, unsurprisingly) is always good fun, as is the Hangover Cross at Coalville on New Year's Day.

Next year, the National Championships will be on our doorstep at Sutton Park. After the mud bath at Southampton in 2008 and some very exciting races indeed at Bradford this year, let's see if the Midlands can offer up some local heroes.

The National Trophy Series has not been targeted by Halesowen riders until recently - and to stunning effect by club member Beth Crumpton who took the Champions Jersey this year in the Girls Youth category.
