freewheelers
Our Freewheelers coaching caters for categories Youth C (under 12), Youth D (under 10), and Youth E (under 8).
The club holds Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday track coaching sessions for Freewheelers throughout the spring and summer months (March to September).
During the winter months we have cyclo-cross coaching sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Sunday mornings when there are no events in the West Midlands Cyclo Cross League.
Our 2010 programme is available herewhat you need
Anybody under twelve years old can ride with the Freewheelers on any sort of bike, so long as it is in a safe condition. Riders must be able to ride a two-wheeled cycle under control without adult assistance. The club cannot take responsibility for repairing machines at the track. Riders must also wear a cycle helmet and suitable clothing during club coaching sessions and races.
New riders will get two or three 'free' sessions with the Freewheelers before being invited to join the club.
what we expect
Halesowen Freewheelers are some of the most talented cyclists in the country because they work hard during training and because the riders look out for each other to avoid crashes and pass on their skills.
Riders must be prepared to listen and obey the instructions of the coaches.
Riders must take responsibility for their safety and safety of other riders sharing the track by being careful to look when crossing the track, moving off from the fence or making other manoeuvres.
Riders will normally need some warm clothing to wear in addition to their cycling vest and shorts for periods when they are not on the bike. During the winter season, riders will usually need long sleeve tops and track suit bottoms even when riding.
Parents will not normally be required in the track centre except to assist and reassure very young children or to 'hold' riders at the start of events.
Riders should have eaten before coming to the track. All riders should be capable of completing the 15 minute warm-up and subsequent session without needing to stop for food. There is a break after approximately 45mins.
The sessions demand mental concentration and physical exertion and riders should ensure that they have sufficient sleep the night before a session.
Riders must be at the track at least 15 minutes before the start of the coaching session to allow time for registration.
Coaching starts at 10:00 on Sundays and 17:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays with warm-up exercises and we expect riders to be ready to start on time. It is not safe or healthy for late arrivals to try to tag on to the back of a fast moving bunch of riders towards the end of the warm up. They will be made to wait and join the session later.
To participate in our coaching and training programmes and to race in Club colours, we do need formal consent from a parent or legal guardian. Our parental consent form is available here.
